About DLace
.. ... ....... @DirtyLaceDesign ... ...... -Founder of DirtyLace Designs, Artist and Designer- .... .......... .. Think of me as your bipolar friend. One day I'll show up in leather pants with a grungy oversized shirt and go on and on about modern design while taking a long island to the head. The next day I'll be sipping on wine in a feminine lace dress paired with brightly colored heels talking about the shortage of trees and beautiful art. And somewhere in between all that is a lot of sarcasm. This blog embodies my DirtyLace personality. Filled with personal thoughts, ideas, and inspirations that are drawn from fashion, art and design. DIY : MARY KATRANTZOU INSPIRED COLORED SPIKED HEELS
The easiest way to update any item of clothing in your closet is with studs.
Mary Katrantzou’s Spring 2012 collection had clear jelly heeled sandals in delicious candy colored spikes.
Which had me on a mini hunt for clear heels and needless to say, there was an overwhelming amount of stripper heels out there !
In order for this look to work [assuming you’re not into the stripper look] you have to choose a pair with short heels. Like Mary Katrantzou did for her collection, try to keep the heel below 4 inches.
I opted for a clear heel with neon pink colored straps. The straps already had tiny little holes incorporated in the design of the heel, so it made this DIY super easy.
I paired it with gold English Punk studs from Spikes And Studs, which I later on realized were too big for the “Mary” look I originally intended. So instead of covering the entire sandal with slightly over sized studs, I did 3 studs on one side of the heel followed by 3 studs on the strap on the opposite side.
The heel suprisingly goes great with a lot of things ! Not to mention that the neon pink screams summertime.
If you don’t own any jelly or clear heels, Stuart Weitzman has a great clear platform sandal that would also work great for this DIY.

DIRTYLACE STYLING TIP : Scarves As Clothes
The style icon Grace Kelly, once famously wore her Hermes silk scarf as an elegant arm sling when she was injured.
So naturally the multifunctional silk fabric has made a comeback in recent collections such as D&G’s Spring 2012 and Brood’s Fall 2012 collection, which were both reminiscent of Hermes’ long silk scarfs being knotted and tied into stylish dresses, tops and skirts.
And with the Hermes’ cute “How to tie a scarf” knotting cards, people were looking at their long scarves in a whole different light. You can create anywhere from tops, to minis to long flowy dresses with these beautiful fabrics. Absolutely Faabulous also did a great DIY on a knotted Hermes look that I can’t wait to try out.
But if you don’t own a Hermes scarf (which can run anywhere from $200 to $400+), you can still create this look with any scarf you may have. The best materials for this style are anything flowy, like chiffon, or rich fabrics likes satin with a slight sheen. Also the bigger the better, at least 36x36inches in size gives you plenty of fabric to work with.
I first tried using scarves as clothing back when I was 19 and had run out of new “clubbing clothes” for the weekend (oh the horror!). As a quick solution to my horrific dilemma at the time, I grabbed a vintage wine colored scarf I had and wore it as a halter top by tucking the ends into high waisted jeans and securing it with a waist belt. Fast forward 7 years I can’t say I’d go for that same exact look now, but I definitely still turn to scarves for a 3-in-One look and for when I need to pack light.
DirtyLace Designs has a great selection of silk scarves as well and it will be launching its e-commerce store soon, so be sure to check back !

DIY : FUR SHOULDER PANELS Part II
Couple weeks ago I showed you guys how to give a plain blazer a rocker makeover, and shared the first set of photos from the photoshoot we had showcasing DirtyLace’s latest DIY.
This set of photos are my favorite though. For starters we drove around for about an hour looking for the right location for the shoot, then we actually had to break into a car junk yard for these photos, not to mention that it was a very, very cold Boston night.
But we were able to pull it off and got some great shots !

DIY : FUR SHOULDER PANELS
Some time ago I posted a sneak peak on Instagram noting that this DIY was quickly becoming one of my favorites !(I post all previews, sneak peaks and photoshoot bloopers on Instagram so be sure to follow @DLace)
I am admittedly going through a serious Blazer phase. There’s just so much you can do with them and they go with any outfit; from casual to a night out to a meeting with the big boss. Blazers and gloves are becoming my go to staples. But I’ll get to the gloves later (of which I cannot WAIT to show you guys AHHH)…
This DIY was a tiny bit more time consuming than our usually quicker ones. But don’t worry, the easy factor is still there.
What You’ll Need :
• A white or cream colored Blazer, in a classic fit or fitted.
• About half a yard of Faux Fur
• Sewing needle and matching thread
• Scissors
The Steps :
1. Determine the size and shape you want your fur shoulder panels to be
2. Once that’s decided, you can either do a mock up with a cheaper fabric first, create a paper pattern, or even use an old pair of shoulder pads as a guide. You want to make sure you plan it out first before cutting your desired fabric. If you have an “oops I messed that up” moment, at least it was paper or an old scrap of fabric.
3. To follow alongside the curved seams within the blazer’s collar, I had to have two darts in each fur panel. Depending on the side and placement of yours, you may have to have them as well.
4. Once you’ve finished sewing the panels to your blazer, trim any access fur hairs (haaa)
Done and done ! How badass do you feel right now?
