About DLace

.. ... ....... @DirtyLaceDesign ... ...... -Founder of DirtyLace Designs, Artist and Designer- .... .......... .. Think of me as your bipolar friend. One day I'll show up in leather pants with a grungy oversized shirt and go on and on about modern design while taking a long island to the head. The next day I'll be sipping on wine in a feminine lace dress paired with brightly colored heels talking about the shortage of trees and beautiful art. And somewhere in between all that is a lot of sarcasm. This blog embodies my DirtyLace personality. Filled with personal thoughts, ideas, and inspirations that are drawn from fashion, art and design. DIRTYLACE STYLING TIP : Scarves As ClothesThe style icon Grace Kelly, once famously wore her Hermes silk scarf as an elegant arm sling when she was injured. So naturally the multifunctional silk fabric has made a comeback in recent collections such as D&G’s Spring 2012 and Brood’s Fall 2012 collection, which were both reminiscent of Hermes’ long silk scarfs being knotted and tied into stylish dresses, tops and skirts. And with the Hermes’ cute “How to tie a scarf” knotting cards, people were looking at their long scarves in a whole different light. You can create anywhere from tops, to minis to long flowy dresses with these beautiful fabrics. Absolutely Faabulous also did a great DIY on a knotted Hermes look that I can’t wait to try out.But if you don’t own a Hermes scarf (which can run anywhere from $200 to $400+), you can still create this look with any scarf you may have. The best materials for this style are anything flowy, like chiffon, or rich fabrics likes satin with a slight sheen. Also the bigger the better, at least 36x36inches in size gives you plenty of fabric to work with.I first tried using scarves as clothing back when I was 19 and had run out of new “clubbing clothes” for the weekend (oh the horror!). As a quick solution to my horrific dilemma at the time, I grabbed a vintage wine colored scarf I had and wore it as a halter top by tucking the ends into high waisted jeans and securing it with a waist belt. Fast forward 7 years I can’t say I’d go for that same exact look now, but I definitely still turn to scarves for a 3-in-One look and for when I need to pack light. DirtyLace Designs has a great selection of silk scarves as well and it will be launching its e-commerce store soon, so be sure to check back ! Love, DLace

DIY : FUR SHOULDER PANELS Part II
Couple weeks ago I showed you guys how to give a plain blazer a rocker makeover, and shared the first set of photos from the photoshoot we had showcasing DirtyLace’s latest DIY.
This set of photos are my favorite though. For starters we drove around for about an hour looking for the right location for the shoot, then we actually had to break into a car junk yard for these photos, not to mention that it was a very, very cold Boston night.
But we were able to pull it off and got some great shots !

DIY : FUR SHOULDER PANELS
Some time ago I posted a sneak peak on Instagram noting that this DIY was quickly becoming one of my favorites !(I post all previews, sneak peaks and photoshoot bloopers on Instagram so be sure to follow @DLace)
I am admittedly going through a serious Blazer phase. There’s just so much you can do with them and they go with any outfit; from casual to a night out to a meeting with the big boss. Blazers and gloves are becoming my go to staples. But I’ll get to the gloves later (of which I cannot WAIT to show you guys AHHH)…This DIY was a tiny bit more time consuming than our usually quicker ones. But don’t worry, the easy factor is still there. What You’ll Need :• A white or cream colored Blazer, in a classic fit or fitted. • About half a yard of Faux Fur • Sewing needle and matching thread • ScissorsThe Steps :1. Determine the size and shape you want your fur shoulder panels to be2. Once that’s decided, you can either do a mock up with a cheaper fabric first, create a paper pattern, or even use an old pair of shoulder pads as a guide. You want to make sure you plan it out first before cutting your desired fabric. If you have an “oops I messed that up” moment, at least it was paper or an old scrap of fabric.3. To follow alongside the curved seams within the blazer’s collar, I had to have two darts in each fur panel. Depending on the side and placement of yours, you may have to have them as well.4. Once you’ve finished sewing the panels to your blazer, trim any access fur hairs (haaa)Done and done ! How badass do you feel right now?

DIY : PINK OMBRE HAIR
Ombre hair has been stirring up quite a hair frenzy for the last season or so. I am obviously guilty of the trend, mainly because it looks awesome and because I hate doing touch ups. I don’t have the patience to go to the salon every few weeks to touch up my roots SO this was a perfect solution for me.
But like all trends, after some time you get used to it and you start looking for the next different thing. I’ve been contemplating taking my ombre hair to the next level to PINK ombre hair. I have always wanted to try pink but never quite had to the cojones for it because it meant A. commitment to keep up with the color and B. because it may have posed a threat to my sense of color matching outfits (“pink wont match this bright blue dress…will it?”).
And then it came to me, well rather HairRomance came to me (she’s lovely): commitment-free washable pink hair !
In her post she explains the origin of the trend and how Kevin Murphy was a year ahead of the game by tinting Abbey Lee’s hair for a Vogue shoot.
I probably read her post around 2-3AM (in bed) and quickly jumped up to get my credit card because this was too genius and my hair would’ve been pissed if I didn’t buy my own ColorBug.
The process is quite easy. Just make sure to use gloves and have your hair pre-textured with some type of hair product (I used hairspray) so that it sticks well. If you want a more intense look, you can keep layering the product over your hair until you get a more saturated pink.
You can purchase your very own Kevin Murphy ColorBug at AdoreBeauty for $24.95, in Pink, Orange or Purple. Also check out his how-to video to get a better sense on how to do your own Ombre Hair.
My hair and this product made sweet, passionate, just-met-backstage-at-a-rock-concert, love. Don’t you want that?

DIY : A TOUCH OF DIRTYLACE
I’ve done a similar Trim DIY with silk organza, but this is the mother of all Easy-DIY!
All you need is about a yard of Black Lace Trim with a 2 1/2in - 3in width and matching thread. Hand or machine sew the trim along the bottom of any jacket you may have, and you got an instant touch of DirtyLace.
